Sciatic
and Leg Pain:
People
that have experienced sciatic or leg pain will testify that it is one
of the most excruciating pains that you could ever experience. Occasionally
pain is felt in the front or the side of the legs, in the hips, or down
the back of the legs. The pain is experienced as a paresthesia ( pins
and needles), burning, tingling, and sharp shooting pains that are felt
in one or both legs. Sleeping, sitting, walking, bending, turning,
or standing may be difficult or near impossible while experiencing this
pain.
The
sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It is largest
as it exits the lower spine and gradually decreases its size as it passes
down both the legs into the feet. Sciatic and leg pain most often
start with a long period of intermittent mild low back pain. Not
all pain is sciatica, but most all sciatic cases involves leg pain.
Sciatic
and leg pain are usually caused by the pinching of one or more of the
spinal nerve roots between the vertebra in the low back. Sometimes
a so-called herniated or "slipped" disc where the nerve root
emerges in the low back may protrude or press upon the nerve, therefore
causing sciatic or leg pain. However, pinching of this nerve is by far
the most frequent cause.
Chiropractors
are specialists in detecting and correcting spinal misalignments that
cause pain in the low back and down the legs. Correcting these misalignments
with specific chiropractic manipulation can and will restore a more
normal position and motion of the affected spinal bones. The success
of this approach has been documented in numerous research projects and
have helped many patients enjoy a drug free and surgical free solution
to this painful problem.
