Scoliosis:
Scoliosis
is the sideways curving of the spine that often starts during adolescence
or childhood. It is thought that scoliosis is the result of an
adaptation to some sort of trauma, such as the birth process, or an
injury, such as falling off a bicycle. In fact, recent research
has demonstrated that this curvature is most likely due to an inherent
weakness of the muscles along the spinal column. The higher the curvature,
the greater the chance of deformity and complications with the body's
organs.
Spinal
bones (vertebras) continue to grow well into the early 20's and if left
uncorrected, scoliosis often worsens. Unfortunately, the most common
treatment approach in the past has been a wait and see approach to see
how bad the spine bends, and if it progresses too far, then resorting
to unsightly braces or even eventually surgery that immobilizes the
spine.
It
is very important to have your children's spine checked for proper development.
Many potentially serious spinal disorders may be caught by early detection
and possibly prevented with proper Chiropractic care. The following
checklist may help you determine if your child is possibly suffering
from Scoliosis.
1.
When your child is standing in an upright position does his/her spine
appear to be straight?
2.
Have your child bend forward with arms dangling down. Then run
your hand over their spine, does it curve from side to side?
3.
Have your child stand straight, look at the child from behind, does
one shoulder blade tend to protrude and appear to be higher than the
other?
4.
Does your child's hips look uneven?
5.
Does your child's back appear humped or rounded?
6.
Does your child complain of pain in the back?
It
is possible for spinal misalignments to cause a curvature of the spine
and if it is discovered in time, there are Chiropractic methods such
as specific gentle spinal adjustments combined with corrective exercises
that may reduce the curvature and prevent the Scoliosis from worsening.
