Symptoms and Treatment for Migraines

Your Joplin Chiropractor Provides Migraine Treatment with Chiropractic Techniques

Severe nerve irritation is the leading cause of migraines. While over-the-counter and prescription pain medications may offer temporary relief, they do nothing to relieve the primary reason for migraines such as nerve compression due to misalignment of cervical spinal vertebrae. When the upper vertebrae are forced out of normal positions, they will press against sensitive nerves endings extending from the spine to all parts of the body. Unless your chiropractor in Joplin performs an adjustment to the spine, vertebrae will remain out of position and continue compressing and irritating nerves.

Symptoms of Migraines

The main difference between a migraine and a headache is that migraines almost always affect one side of the head while headaches cause pain across the head, forehead, and back of the skull. Most migraine sufferers experience symptoms before migraine pain begins. "Prodrome" stage migraine symptoms include fatigue, anxiety, cravings for high-sugar foods and a sore neck. "Aura" stage migraine symptoms can occur before or during migraine attacks. These symptoms involve seeing light flashes or bright spots, ringing in the ears and tingling sensations in a leg or arm. Throbbing pain on one side of the head, nausea, blurry vision, dizziness and extreme sensitivity to sounds, odors and light indicate a migraine has reached the "attack" stage". Full-blown migraines can last for a few hours or can last as long several days.

Chiropractic Migraine Treatment

During your first migraine treatment visit, your chiropractor will discuss your medical history, migraine symptoms and possibly order an x-ray to further define a diagnosis. To relieve nerve compression and recurring migraines, your Joplin chiropractor, Dr. Skaggs, will adjust your spinal vertebrae using chiropractic manipulation to restore spinal alignment. Once nerves are no longer being irritated by vertebrae pressing on them, migraines gradually diminish in intensity and occurrence.
